Is this normal? Brand new dutch oven (direct from online website) came with pin holes inside. Thanks so much for your help!
I would get them to send you a new one. it concerns me how deep that one is that you can see the cast iron that it could get worse over time
Mine came with a pinhole just like that. I would have exchanged it but then they discontinued my color (marine). A part of me regrets not settling for a different color. I would recommend exchanging it for peace of mind.
Mine has a few pinholes as well. Can’t really tell from the photo how deep yours is but mine have not gotten bigger or caused any issues with use. If you search “pinholes” you’ll find similar posts, it seems to be somewhat common. I wouldn’t worry to much about it personally.
Thank you all for your help. They told me it’s normal and have not offered me to exchange it. I feel super uncomfortable now— I thought their customer service was really strong? Any advice for what I can do now?
Unfortunately this is one of the reasons it’s great to buy from a retailer instead of direct. If you get it from Williams-Sonoma or Sur La Table, you can exchange no questions asked.
That said, a few of my pieces have similar small pinholes and they haven’t caused any issues. There’s a rough layer of primer enamel below the colored enamel. Definitely there isn’t bare cast iron at the dimple/pinholes, so I don’t worry about it, and have had no issues.
If the enamel were to flake, you would definitely want to use their lifetime warranty, as it’s not something that should ever happen.
Here’s a video of how they’re made – you can see the primer applied first, before colors go on.
